Mant Farm

The Mant Farm was an art installation project for Burning Man featuring a dramatic, immersive, interactive vertical maze where one could explore the concepts of maturation, citizenship, nostalgia, scale, and systems of communities – in a working “ant farm” built to human scale. Burning Man 2010 – Metropolis – Art Grant Honorarium Recipient.

My contributions: Co-Lead / Designer / Engineer. In collaboration with my design partner, we explored and conceived of the concept. We studied scaffold systems and materials capable of withstanding extreme elements including 70 mph + wind speeds. We built, in CAD, a complete engineering model of the structure to stress test all the components & materials for load-bearing, shear stress and safety factors. To promote and support the project we creating a complete brand identity, a full website, and a line of merchandise.

This was a hugely enjoyable collaborative project. Along with Walking Fish Studios, we conceived of, designed and constructed this immense structure, standing 40 feet tall and 56 feet long, installed in the the Black Rock desert in NV for the Burning Man arts festival. The project was funded by the Burning Man organization through one of 30 awarded grants out of over 270 applicants.
